For I will be horribly in love with her

"For I will be horribly in love with her." With just these nine words, William Shakespeare illustrates his genius through the character of Benedick in one of his best-loved plays, Much Ado About Nothing (the exact quote can be found in Act II, Scene III). Much Ado it may be, but it is far far more than Nothing. This one line is at the same time Everything, and for this reason should be treasured as one of the greatest works of art ever produced by humankind.

Perhaps some will skim thoughtlessly over the line, demoting it to the regions of such non-entities as "Leave not a rack behind" (from The Tempest, a quote so utterly boring that even Shakespeare himself is said to have fallen asleep writing it) and instead concentrate on other extracts chosen for no good reason other than stupidity, such as "To be or not to be, that is the question" and "Alas, poor Yorick" (both from Hamlet, a play which is both depressing and depressingly over-quoted), and "Wherefore art thou, Romeo?" (from Romeo and Juliet, a delightful story about two lovers who end up killing themselves), but this site (God bless it) is devoted entirely to what is surely the most important quote in all of Shakespearean literature, excepting various asides on lines close by in the script, the characters involved, the play itself, and general irrelevance.

Read, and be encultured.
